Renewal

Sometimes we need renewal. We can't keep our foot on the gas all the time. I'm really thankful for the opportunity to recharge a little bit by stepping back and taking a real vacation. It's been a long time. I'm looking forward to spending some time with friends and family and doing whatever we feel like doing.

I hope you build into your life a rhythm that allows you to work really hard, but also to rest, to step back and to breathe deeply. In my family we fight pretty hard to maintain a sabbath - a day of rest every week. For us, it's usually Saturday. It's the day we play, the day we take naps, the day we go to parks and get outside.

But beyond that, we all need an extended break. Time away from the normal stuff of life. Time to spend money instead of making it, to build memories instead of building our empires, to pour into our families instead of our customers, and to refresh our souls.

So get outside, plan a vacation, take a nap - do whatever it takes to refresh.

I'll be at the beach if you need me.

Fasting

Our church community is still working our way through the Sermon on the Mount in Matt. 5-7. This week we're dealing with the section on fasting. We've challenged each other to fast in some way this week, whether it's one meal, one day, a media fast, whatever. During this time we are meditating on Psalm 91. My hope is that when we come together this Saturday night to talk about Jesus's words on fasting, that we will have fresh perspective on it.

Fasting is an interesting practice. It's been a habit of the church for centuries, done for the purpose of focusing on prayer and hearing from God. It's a way to sort of remind yourself that your place in the world, your very life, isn't sustained ultimately by food or the security of your next meal, but by the God who holds all things together. The temptation of food during a fast is an interesting dynamic. It's a temptation to take care of your own needs, to sustain yourself. The battle that takes place is whether I will find my sustaining strength in God or in what can only satisfy for a short time. It's no accident that in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus goes straight from talking about fasting into talking about those that seek to "store up for [them]selves treasures on earth...." Money and wealth provide the same kind of temptation that food does in a fast. If I can just create for myself a situation where I'm financially secure and safe, then all is well. Hoarding money is one way that we try and provide for ourselves, and to secure our own futures. For Jesus, the cure for self-dependence is freeing ourselves from the false belief that our very existence is dependent upon our own efforts. It's the very reason we fast - we remind ourselves that food is not what keeps us alive. It's why we try and become generous people - because it's in giving things away that we remind ourselves that our value and importance isn't based upon our bottom line.

This is the same idea that is going on with Sabbath. Sabbath is an intentional time of rest. We stop producing, stop working, and simply rest. This is really difficult for us some times. Why is that? It's because in stopping that we are forced to realize that the world goes on spinning even without our efforts. We realize that it's God who keeps things moving, not us. When we stop and rest, we remind ourselves of our need for God, and that our value and worth don't come from what we produce, but from resting in Him.

There are many disciplines like this within the Christian faith. Giving, fasting, resting, silence, prayer, the list goes on. Each one plays an important role in freeing us from the belief that we can do this thing on our own. Rather we are reminded of God's presence in the everyday, the normal, mundane parts of life and that it is He alone who keeps it all running. It's not my efforts, not food, not the constant producing, not my words, not anything else.

I would challenge you to participate with us as a church community this week. Deprive yourself of the things that make you believe that you are the God of your universe, and let Him show you that He loves you, he cares for you, and that the world will keep on moving with or without your efforts. And while your body says "feed me", let your heart be reminded that the One who sustains all things will sustain you as well.

Stress

Life feels kind of crazy right now. I think I'm in one of those stressed times that I get into every so often. I notice that I start to get more quiet, I withdraw from my family, and I don't really want to do much of anything. It usually starts with finances, which is exactly how it is this time. There are certain rhythms to our finances. It seems like we do OK for a few months at a time, and then suddenly the bills all come at the same time, there isn't a paycheck coming for a while, and we have almost no cash in the bank. I don't know why I stress about it so much. Like I said, this seems to happen every few months, and we always make it. God always provides for us in amazing ways. And yet, I still stress over it.

Add to that our newly growing family. Joy had her worst night ever last night. She had us up almost all night long trying to get her to sleep. I was definitely not happy about it as I was really tired. I let that frustration come out, and I think I left my wife in a position where she felt like she had to deal with it. On top of that, Hannah has an infection of some kind that makes her scream in pain every time she goes to the bathroom. So this morning Kimi is taking her to the doctor, trying to tote the baby around, and having to watch her sister. Meanwhile, as she is pulling out of the garage we notice she is almost out of gas - back to the finances....

Ahhh!! I'm just frustrated today. I've also missed our winter retreat this weekend in order to be home, and that has really been weighing on me. I'm glad I have been home to help out with Hannah and with the baby. But at the same time I feel like I missed out on a weekend of hanging out with our students.

Listen to me, I sound selfish and whiny this morning. God help me to change my attitude and suck it up. I know that you are faithful to meet all of our needs and I just need to trust you. I don't think it's any accident that this is the week I'm supposed to talk about the 4th commandment in my series on the 10 commandments. This is the one about the Sabbath. It reminds me of the need for a rhythm of work and rest in my life. I feel like I get plenty of time off, I'm just not sure I use that time to rest. So it will be good for me to study this command and refresh my spirit as we discuss sabbath this week. In the meantime, I need to buy my wife some flowers. She's amazing and I need to remind her of that today.
